In less than 5 minutes driving, you can find yourself at the best surf spots in Kaikoura or bike ride to a well maintained track that follows the Hapuku river to the ocean (20 min) and continues to Mount Fyffe (1h) (there is a possibility to hire bikes directly with us - on request). In the heat of summer, if you feel like having a refreshing swim, take a 10 minute walk to the Hapuku river swimming hole. Kaikoura is perhaps best known for its remarkable marine life and is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated destinations for whale watching. Sperm whales can be seen year-round, drawn to the deep underwater canyons just off the Kaikoura coast. From May to September, migrating humpback whales, southern right whales and pilot whales may be seen closer to shore, while the warmer months from November to March can bring occasional sightings of blue whales and pods of orca. Dolphins and fur seals are also found along the coastline throughout the year, making Kaikoura an exceptional destination for wildlife encounters in every season. Beyond the ocean, Kaikoura offers an abundance of hiking and outdoor adventures. Explore the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway for sweeping coastal views, visit the Ohau Point Lookout to watch fur seals along the rugged shoreline, or take on the climb to the summit of Mt Fyffe for spectacular views across the Kaikoura Ranges and Pacific Ocean. With mountains meeting the sea, Kaikoura is a place to experience some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes, whether on the water, along the coast or high above it.
