About this Holiday House
"The Old Schoolhouse" is how official documents refer to this historic Manuka Bay villa but it would be more accurate to call it "The School Mistress's House." Before rail, the port just north of the villa was the main conduit for commerce and the township of Port Robinson was planned out around it and the school and the principal's house were built. The quality construction, ornate fireplaces and grand setting of ˜The Old Schoolhouse" are testimony to the aspirations of those times.
Although situated within minutes of Gore Bay's popular attractions, the Schoolhouse maintains a tranquil setting being insulated by pasture land and paper roads of the unformed town. It looks across a reserve to the Point Gibson beacon with the ocean beyond and its last long term resident (and mother of the current owner) was, for 12 years, the unofficial lighthouse keeper. The villa's furniture and decorations still convey the cozy atmosphere she created there. For the 45 years prior to retirement this lady was - you guessed it - a schoolteacher!
Within 15 mins. of the Schoolhouse are two beaches, a lagoon, river, bushwalks, a seal colony and Cheviot township.
New Sleepout - the rebuild of the historic farm-shed has enabled cozy accommodation for an extra couple or single person. *Fold out divan *Sunny and fully insulated
