Tucked into native bush on an elevated ridge, it sleeps up to seven across three bedrooms and suits families, couples or friends who want space without booking a larger house than they need. The open-plan kitchen and living area flows onto generous front and rear decks. Watch the sunrise over the ocean from the front, then move to the sheltered back deck and lawn for afternoon drinks, outdoor dining and the BBQ. The decks let you follow the sun or find shelter throughout the day. LOCATION Ruru sits on a private native-bush estate at Medlands Beach. The beach is a short walk away, while Aotea Brewing and Aotea Roast are around five minutes away on foot. Great Barrier Island is completely off-grid and is recognised as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. At night, the lack of city light puts the Milky Way on full display. Ruru, the native morepork owl after which the house is named, can often be heard around the property after dusk. Solar power and rainwater collection come with a proper kitchen, hot showers, reliable Starlink and a fireplace for cooler evenings. Off-grid does not mean roughing it.
