The Buller region offers something for everyone, whether its kicking back relaxing and watching Hectors dolphin cruising past close to shore (if you are lucky) or something more active.
The Nikau Beach holiday house is located at the northern edge of the historic coastal coal towns of Granity, Ngakawau and Hector with beach access across the road and a wide range of outdoor activities on your doorstep including swimming, bush walks, mountain biking and fishing (salt water and freshwater).
The local area has an active arts and crafts community, including Torea gallery located in Granity, as well as those operated by individual artists. If your timing is right, you might also have a change to catch a show at the art deco Lyric Theatre in Granity or pop in for one of the regular events including table tennis (all comers welcome).
Hector has an outdoor swimming pool that operates throughout summer as well as a dairy that stocks a range of groceries and soft drinks
One hours drive north takes you to Karamea and the end of the road (literally) at Kohaihai, the southern end of the Heaphy Track, or go exploring the natural beauty of the Oparara arches (ancient limestone archs carved out over past millenia). Closer to home you can head up to Seddonville and explore the West Coast end of the Old Ghost Road (on foot or mountain bike).
To the south, turn off at Waimagaroa to visit the historic Denniston plateau has a range of old mining sites, including the renowned Denniston incline used to transport coal down to the railhead, as well as a museum and extensive walking and mountain biking tracks.
From Westport you can ride the Kawatiri trail linking Westport to Charleston via Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay or if surfing is your thing you can head directly to Tip head (where the mighty Buller River meets the Tasman or further afield to Tauranga Bay where the beach breaks offer left-handers and there is a left hand point break too with generally good surf at all stages of the tide.
