About this Holiday House

waterfront cottage COD COTTAGE is a self contained kiwistyle basic bach and is the brown one in the photo, (please be aware that some pictures are no longer accurate the BBQ shown on deck is no longer available and a ranchslider now opens onto the deck pictured which has changed the living layout somewhat . If you want to BBQ please bring your own) Cod is two bedroomed and ideal for 4 (but can sleep 6 if the pullout sofa is used but would be cramped) Sometimes available is also a selfcontained caravan next door (the green one in photo) which sleeps 4. So maximum if using both is 10.Please ask about "Penthouse" if interested as it is not always available. Both have a large private lawn and garden with safe swimming shell beach right at front door. locations like this are rarely available. kayaks, dinghy and bikes are sometimes available to borrow but this is strictly at your own risk. Both are let on an 'as is' basis and we rely heavily on folk doing the right thing and leaving as they find Penthouse caravan was originally built by CI Munro caravans for permanent living it is ideal for 2 but can sleep 4 using pullout sofa. Renting this too when available may be an ideal option for large families or friends wanting to holiday together, but still be private and selfcontained for a great summer holiday right on the seafront. No cot or highchair. Special onsite amenities: Private, quiet, waterfront on beautiful Akaroa Harbour playground for fishing.swimming and water craft with sea views - away from the crowds but close enough to enjoy all the attractions of Akaroa township. Has optional extras sometimes available to borrow Please ask. All only to be used at your own risk and kids must have adult supervision. A large flat lawn area for soccer, badminton or volleyball. Watch a variety array of seabird wildlife from your bed! This summer we were thrilled to host 3 beautiful royal spoonbills! Easy to keep an eye on the kids while you relax on the deck as they play in the tidal sea across the quiet road or try fishing the incoming tide from the seawall outside the gate. Swim straight off the beach at high tide or off "the black rock" 40 meters south at low tide. A private playground for people who love the outdoors and wild life. Please make sure you scroll down for more info under availability and rates over school and public holidays. Special attractions and activities nearby: Historic Akaroa township 10 min drive away. A boat launching ramp just across the bay and an 18 hole golf course is within minutes drive away, and you can easily walk to the shop and popular cafe. Nearby is a country pub serving great meals to take care of your appetite and also down the road a church to care for your soul!! Fish can sometimes be caught at high tide casting from the seawall. Or stroll a little further to the wharf to fish the incoming tide. Stroll further and find on a more somber note Onawe Peninsula site of Te Rauparaha's dreadful attack and massacre of local Maori in 1831. A useful booklet describing this historical event is available to purchase for $20. and the walk out onto the Onawe Peninsula is a must. For those of you who knew and loved them as we did, sadly Winnie the donkey and Moses the pet sheep have passed away, but the new exciting project of a large kauri expilot boat being restored on the property will be especially interesting and educational for kids to see - we are undecided as to whether she will eventually go back to sea as a pirate boat or Noah's ark! Let the kids tell us their preference!! Of course the township of Akaroa 10 minutes drive away has many more fantastic eateries, shops and often in summer cruise ships to admire.

Cod Cottage was the perfect wee weekend getaway for our family of 5. It is as advertised, a traditional Kiwi bach, which we loved. Queen bed was comfy and kids were happy on bunks and the couch. Kitchen was clean and well appointed, heat pump kept us toasty despite the very average rainy weather. Even in the rain, it's a gorgeous spot with a lovely view and neat birdlife to watch, and an ever changing tidal outlook. Would be an epic spot in the summer esp with wee kiddos as there's plenty of space for them to play outside. Super private due to trees either side, and tucked away up off the road (which was very quiet while we were there - made for lovely walking!). Communication with Beverley was a delight, and prompt - great instructions and such a privilege to share in her wee corner of the world 🥰

The cottage was great. The beach was a perfect view waking up in the morning. Perfect for a wee family. The township is not that far away. Some walks near the cottage. Would definitely come back with our kids next time.
