Relax on the deck, or in the sunny conservatory and enjoy the ever changing sea in all her moods. Watch the boats and soaring seabirds going about their daily activities. Wake up to watch our spectacular sunrises that truly deserve the term "glowing skies". Stewart Island is renowned for its uncluttered beaches and clear water. Walk down the private driveway, and in 2 minutes you will be sinking your feet into the clean golden sand of Butterfields Beach. This is a fabulous beach for the young and young at heart! Akomoana's birdlife abounds throughout the private garden and in the surrounding native bush on the property. Be delighted by frequent bird visitors: tui, tomtits, the cheeky and gregarious kaka (parrot), tuneful bellbirds and shy robins; most are seen at Akomoana daily. Kiwi are seen occasionally. At Akomoana you can enjoy the benefits of relative isolation, surrounded by nature, yet a few minutes' walk or drive to Oban township. Unpack and settle in, then feel yourself unwind and relax in this comfortable self-contained home.
The township & wharf are only a casual 15-20 minute walk (dependent on age and fitness level- including some hills) along Horseshoe Bay Road, with points of interest along the way. Pause at Mill Creek, the site of an early 1800's sawmill, watch for kingfishers on the fuchsia tree, or take a right turn onto Mapua Road and check out one of the best views from the local cemetery. Historic headstones give glimpses into the island's past. At the top of the hill, turn left onto Kamahi Road and follow the sign posted track to Bathing Beach.
Once in the township, all activities are accessible from here. Visit the general store for supplies (they can deliver), check out the Information Centre to book fishing trips, hire a scooter, e-bike or mountain bike!
Boat cruises and a bus tour are easy ways to experience more of Rakiura's wonderful natural heritage and recent human history. Visit the famous South Sea Hotel to quench your thirst or enjoy our famous blue cod on the menu. For a gold coin you can purchase a day walks leaflet from the Dept. of Conservation Centre.
