This region is steeped in local history, with many landmarks named after the renowned Polynesian navigator Kupe, who lived in the immediate area for over two decades.

Enjoy secluded native bush surroundings just minutes’ walk across the road to the sea and seal colony, which has also been home to a large elephant seal. Boat Bay offers easy launching for smaller fishing boats, and there are numerous opportunities for crayfish and paua diving. A short stroll takes you to the lighthouse where you can take the 258 steps and be rewarded with yet another breathtaking view, taking in sweeping vistas of the East Coast. Through the locked gate past the lighthouse and approximately 4km along the coast lies a stone wall and an incredible series of waterfalls—often described as the spa of all spas. Heading back toward Ngawi, you’ll find the famous Kupe’s Sail and Recreational Reserve, which offers a spectacular walk alongside the Mangatoetoe Stream. A further 20 minutes north are The Pinnacles, an iconic walk well worth the effort. The return trip takes about 1.5 hours.
