About this Holiday House

ABOUT THE HOUSE: Enjoy Waimarama in this large, self-contained beach holiday home with breathtaking views along Waimarama surf beach to Cape Kidnappers. Built new in 2011, with 5 bedrooms sleeping 10 on two levels, the home features a large open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen area opening onto a deck overlooking a reserve and the beach. It has been designed to cope with the bustle of family groups and yet it also suits a couple or two looking for a quiet retreat. The two dining tables with inside/outside options make it ideal for a small business retreat. Please note this in our family holiday house, not a commercial enterprise and we wish to treat our neighbours with respect so this is NOT A PARTY HOUSE. The two upstairs bedrooms each open onto a balcony and share a large bathroom with shower, bath and toilet. One of these rooms has twin king singles combining to a super-king double bed. The other upstairs room is a queen. The ground level has three inside bedrooms plus an enclosed veranda room. One has twin singles combining to a King double. The next is a queen double. The large bunk-room has three double bunks plus a roll-away single (i.e. sleeps six singles). The veranda room can be enclosed or open to the sounds of the sea and has a standard double bed. It has a more rustic camping feel. The main ground level bathroom has an accessible shower, bath and toilet. Stay cosy in winter with double glazing, a woodburner and new heatpump installed 2021. ABOUT THE AREA: Waimarama has a population of around 1200 increasing significantly over the summer months. There is NO TSUNAMI warning siren - if there is an earthquake that goes for longer than 1 minute or is strong enough to knock you off your feet then you need to get going immediately. IF IT’S LONG & STRONG GET GONE. Familiarise yourself with the TSUNAMI evacuation points - the best one from this bach is back down Airini Road (past the shop) and turn left. Follow this road (Harper Road) as you go past the camp ground on your left and when you get to the next sweeping corner (which goes left) - you go straight ahead. This is onto private farmland - there is a Tsunami evacuation sign. Follow the driveway until you get to the high point where you will wait until further instructions from civil defence. Please ask Krissy for any advice about Tsunami’s if you need it. If during your stay you happen to hear the fire alarm sounding at the local fire station - this is NOT A TSUNAMI WARNING - it will be a call out for the local volunteer fire brigade, likely to be a fire or accident locally. There are several defibrillators available for emergency situations. The closest one for you is located at the Waimarama Store. There is also one at the Waimarama Surf Club – available during patrol hours. There is a lifeguard tower and supervised swimming area between the flags at the Waimarama Surf Lifesaving area in the reserve. The Domain provides shady picnic spots and a playground, the gates are shut at dusk each night. Groceries + food at Waimarama Beach: The Waimarama Store sells some essentials as well as amazing fresh fish and chips, to die for burgers, delicious barista coffee, ice creams - including fresh fruit over summer, alcohol, fresh bread and milk. As of summer 2023 The Waimarama Store is also selling amazing clothes from Bali and pottery made locally. The shop is open from 9am until 7pm in summer with reduced hours over winter. For the big grocery stock up, the Havelock North New World is the next closest at about a 30 minute drive into Havelock North Village, where you will also find many cafes, restaurants and bars. Special Amenities

Set two houses back from absolute beachfront with views over a grassy reserve, the beach, the ever changing Puhokio stream mouth and Cape Kidnappers in the distance. The reserve becomes an extension for kids to run amok, play volleyball etc. Esther's Cottage replaces the original World War 1 period classic bach purchased by our family in the 1920s. It has hosted generations of the immediate family, relations and friends. In replacing it we have tried to keep some of the original character while bringing in more modern comforts to make it a year-round retreat. This includes plenty of veranda space overlooking the beach and an enclosable veranda area so you can sleep in the semi-open, listening to the surf when the weather suits. A hot water outside shower is heaven after a session on the beach. SMART TV internet connected. No SKY sorry so you'd need MySky account. High speed fibre (50mb up / 30mb down) and WiFi. Mobile coverage is also pretty good for portable hotspot working from your own device.

Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

The vast Waimarama beach is the main attraction, offering swimming, fishing, surfing, skimboarding and endless walks. If you have your own boat there is a charged and a free beach launching area at the south end of the beach. Kontikis are also workable northwards up the beach. The Puhokio stream estuary in front of the house is a fun kids' fishing spot where bait-catchers can keep little kids entertained for hours. The Karamea walk skirts the rocky coast to the south to the volcanic "Red Island" outcrop, accessible at low tide and taking a 1/2 to full day return. Waimarama Maori Tours offers an authentic insight into local heritage and indigenous Maori culture. Maraetotara Falls (15 minutes drive inland) is a lovely streamside swimming hole with a rope swing and dam-jumps for the brave. This Maraetotara loop drive also offers amazing views over limestone outcrops down to the coast and connects to Mohi Bush Walk and Wairunga 9 hole farm golf course. For foodies, within 20-30 minutes drive there are world-class winery restaurants, roadside orchard, berry and vege stalls, Rush Munro's ice cream garden and the weekly farmers market. At Waimarama itself, the local store sells most essential supplies, barista coffee, great fresh fish & chips and amazing burgers and also offers NZ smallest bottle store. For more adventure, Hawke's Bay has some of the best easy cycletrails in the country including coastal, riverside and winecountry trails. For singletrack mountainbiking, Eskdale MTB Park is about 50 minutes to 1 hour's drive north past Napier, (you need to join HB MTB Cub on-line for access). There are also some advanced MTB trails and walks on the side of Te Mata Peak, closer at Havelock North. The lookout here is a must-do providing the iconic HB view. Splashplanet in Hastings is a summer water park with other rides making a great family day out. Also try Birdwood classic lolly shop and sculpture garden near Havelock North, the National Aquarium and HB Museum Theatre Gallery, Art Deco Walks and Marine Parade in Napier which includes an extensive skate/scooter park.

We had a fantasic break away in the MacIntyre's beautiful family bach, a home away from home. Had everything we could possibly need for our week long stay, lovely and clean and lots of space with great proximity to the fantastic Waimarama beach, so grateful you make your home available for others to enjoy.
Mandy Pedersen
Loved the vista from the open plan living room. Plenty of room for guests to relax indoors and outdoors. Very pleased with the ample resources for cooking and dining. Thanks MacIntyre's.
Jen C
What a fantastic property. We used this for a group of 9 ladies for a Mum’s getaway but would be great for families as well. It was perfect in every way. Practically beachfront, with easy access to the beach, views from upstairs and the deck. Close to the shops if you need anything. The house has everything you need. So well thought out and everything is labelled with easy to follow instructions. What a fabulous holiday home. Thanks for having us. We’ll be back. Jen & co
Response from Owner
Thanks Jen for the lovely feedback. C19 has seen more kiwi friend groups and families escaping to Waimarama outside the usual peak summer holiday which is awesome to see. Glad you had a nice time and hope to see you back.
