About this Holiday House
Set among native trees with the soothing sound of the surf in the background, Black Dune offers a peaceful studio hideaway with elevated views toward the Whangarei Heads and glimpses of the Hen and Chickens Islands.
This 30sqm hotel-style studio features seamless indoor–outdoor flow to a sunny deck and lawn bordered by olive trees. Relax in the outdoor lounge beneath blooming pohutukawa in summer, listen to the tui, and watch wood pigeons and quail wander the grounds.
Inside, the studio is designed for comfort with a luxurious king bed, a breakfast nook overlooking the gardens and horizon, and a fridge/chiller, microwave, cutlery, and essentials.
Wake to golden sunrises through the black louvres, enjoy cooling sea breezes, and close the remote blinds for privacy at the end of the day. The modern ensuite features black slate flooring and Italian tiles for a touch of luxury.
When it’s time to explore, you’re perfectly placed in this popular coastal enclave. The estuary — home to rare fairy terns — is an easy walk and ideal for kayaking, surfing, fishing, and swimming. A selection of cafés and restaurants are nearby, or enjoy fish and chips at the beach.
Black Dune is fully solar powered, exceptionally well insulated, and self-sufficient with its own rainwater supply, offering an eco-friendly stay without compromising comfort.
Located along a pretty tourist route, you’re just minutes from Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Beach — rated New Zealand’s second-best surf beach for 2025 — with Waipu township only a few minutes north. A cycleway begins at the main gate for relaxed strolls or scenic runs, and the wider area offers golf courses, the Waipu Caves, Hoppers Marina, boat ramps and fishing charters.
Wi-Fi is provided, and level off-street parking is available beside the three boulders. Black Dune is a quiet, stylish and scenic place to unwind and enjoy the best of the Waipu coastline.
