About this Holiday House

Russellburn Cottage is located near the peaceful village of Springfield. A small town in the Selwyn District of Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand. At the foot of the Southern Alps, 65 kilometres (40 min) west of Christchurch. Russellburn Cottage is secluded and peaceful, with mountains in the background. The perfect place for a country retreat or a place to return to after a day skiing in the nearby ski fields. We are a 30 minute drive to Porter Ski Field and Mount Cheeseman. The cottage is part of the main house but has its own entrance, car park and amenities. Russellburn Farm has been in “The Anderson Family” for over a 100 years. The original cottage is also over 100 years old but of course has been modernised for comfort. The view to the hills is breath taking. There is ample parking. The Cottage is on a working farm where cattle are grazed. Orchards are also around the farm; these include apples and nashi pears. There are several ponds and creeks located around the property. The Games room is a spacious area that allows for snooker games, socialising, reading (books and magazines are on the book shelves) or just watching a movie cuddled up by the fire. All wood is supplied. The kitchen and dining area is also a relaxing space to read by the fire or to just sit and have a coffee or wine. This is a great area for the adults while the kids have their own separate space in the Games Room. There is rural Broadband available. This is a great place for adults and children to relax and enjoy the peace. But if action is what you like then there are a range of attractions and activities available within in a 20km radius. The Village of Springfield The Maori name for Springfield is Tawera. At the foot of the Southern Alps, 65 kilometres (40 min) west of Christchurch, it is the most westerly town of the central Canterbury Plains. Springfield has a long association with the Midland railway line. Springfield is situated in the foothills, less than an hour from the centre of Christchurch on State Highway 73 (The Great Alpine Highway). The town has a Gothic Revival architecture church dedicated to Saint Peter, designed by the architect Cyril Mountfort. It was the birthplace of Rewi Alley, notable for his work in China in the mid-20th century. There is an extensive memorial dedicated to him, located in a small reserve off the main road. It includes a large stone carving and a number of panels giving details of his life. On 15 July 2007, a statue of a giant pink doughnut was erected to promote the upcoming movie, The Simpsons Movie. Springfield is a significant stop on the TranzAlpine train journey across the Southern Alps on the Midland Line.

We loved staying at Russellburn Cottage with the cosy log fires and big night skies. Close to Porters ski field and just under an hour to Christchurch. We're looking forward to staying again soon.

We really enjoyed staying at Russellburn Cottage, particularly the pool table! It was cold when we stayed but the hosts lit both fires for us before we arrived so it was warm inside and stayed warm all night. Plenty of toys for the kids, comfy beds, great shower. Thanks for having us!
