Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

Pauanui in a few comments… • A Map of Pauanui is in the Sandyfeet Compendium • Information Office… an excellent Place to start. Located at the Entrance to the Shopping Centre on Jubilee Ave. A 10 to 15 minute walk. • Pauanui Ocean Beach… a 5 to 10 minute walk to the west. Swimming, Surfing, Tuatua collecting. • Tuatuas – a beautiful shellfish which you can dig for on the Ocean Beach at low tide. Up to 50 Tuatua can be harvested per person). They are best if left in sea water for 12 hours so they get the sand out of their system. They are tasty when steamed open… but our favourite Tuatua meals are Spaghetti with Pauanui Clams (Tuatuas), where the tuatuas are steamed open in a pan with garlic (white wine, chilli, and chopped onion optional), then poured on a bowl of cooked spaghetti, garnished with lots of fresh parsley (and with Olive Oil optional). The other favourite is good old kiwi Tuatua Fritters… steam open the Tuatua (and keep the liquor from the Tuatuas for the batter), remove the Tuatua from the shell. Roughly chop up the Tuatua. Make up a batter with a little flour, a couple of eggs, diced onion, some seasoning (Moroccan preferred, but a dessertspoon of curry powder is also good), lots of fresh parsley (check with us we may have some available) using all the stalks. Add the chopped Tuatuas, and use the Tuatua liquor to get a good fritter consistency. Yum!!! Enjoy! • Tairua estuary… a 5 to 10 minute walk to the West. Safe swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding • Tairua/Paku/Pauanui Ferry… departs from Potton berth by Royal Billy Point Boat Ramp (North end of Vista Paku)… 10 minute walk • Boat Ramps… Royal Billy Point (north end of Vista Paku), and Pleasant Point. • Walk ways / Paths… within Pauanui… All Cul de Sacs have a footpath/walking track which will take you to another street or the beach. There should be no Cul de Sac that you go into and have to come back out the same way • Tairua – Pauanui Trail… a fantastic walk from the West side of the Waterways to Duck Creek (Lakes Resort and the International Golf Course). The official beginning is at the end of Tangitorori Lane. This is for Walking and Cycling. Dogs are permitted but must be on a lead at all time. Cyclists are asked to have a bell or other warning device so that Walkers and Cyclists can enjoy the trail together. The long term plan is for this Walkway/Cycleway to continue out to Hikuai (where you turned off State Highway 25a to come into Pauanui). It will then be continued on the other side of the estuary to Tairua. • GAS Station… 5 minutes walk south on Vista Paku. A very popular spot for local tradesmen, because of the range, quality and value of lunches provided. Assorted groceries etc, but more expensive than the Supervalue Supermarket at the Shopping Centre • ITM Hardware… behind the GAS Station • Plant & Gift Shop… behind the GAS Station • Pauanui Sports & Recreation Club… also the base for the Pines 9 Hole Golf Course, and the Mini-Putt… behind the GAS Station, beside the Airfield. Call in and see what they offer etc… www.pauanuiclub.co.nz • GOLF… two 9 Hole Courses and a Mini Putt a) The Pines, starting from the Pauanui Club, b) The Lakes 9 Hole Course, c) Mini Putt beside the Pauanui Club www.pauanuiclub.co.nz • TENNIS… location of Tennis Courts… Kennedy Park and Waterways. Check with Pauanui Club (www.pauanuiclub.co.nz ) and Information Office • Shopping Centre… Jubilee Ave. Shops include Bakery, Liquor Store, DVD/Video store, Takeaways and Ice Creams, Medical Centre, Pauanui Post & Local Art & Gifts, Real Estate Companies (2), Gift Shop, Ladies Fashion, Supermarket, Cafes/Restaurants (3). At the back of the shop (the West Side) there is a Hair Salon, Beauty Salon, and a very popular Second Hand Shop. Behind the shopping Centre (South) is Marine & Gas for supplies for fishing, BBQs etc • Pizza at the Point – during the busy season is the very popular mobile Pizza trailer… located in the evenings near the Royal Billy Point Boat Ramp and Ferry Pontoon • Library – beside the Information Office (same building) • Childrens Playgrounds… Nearest two… a) Given Grove (3 minutes walk) includes a flying fox, b) Royal Billy Point (10 minute walk – North end of Vista Paku) • Vehicle Servicing/Repairs… we recommend Darren Thompson, of Thompson Automotive, off Tangitorori Lane • The book “Pauanui – A Vision Achieved” is in Sandyfeet Bach. This has some fascinating tales about the development of Pauanui… including that there are no “Streets” or “Roads” in Pauanui. According to the developers, these terms belong in towns and Cities, not a Seaside community. There are some Avenues and Lanes but many more “exotic” street names like… Vista Paku, Parsons Dell, Just In Time, Eldorado Leader, etc prevail as “Street Names” • Quirky??? Just In Time… a 5 minute walk from Sandyfeet Bach. Most of the owners of property in this small “Street” have put the same style signs on their house… e.g. “Just Retired in Time”, “Just Doing Time”, “Just Vino Time” etc. And one house overlooking Just In Time but is on another street, also entered the spirit of fun… and has a sign…” Just Out of Time”! This well worth a casual strolling visit.
