Special Attractions and Activities Nearby
Our love for Nelson comes from the great outdoors, great food and wine, and great art that's all to be found here. Tiro Moana is close to it all. In no particular order:
Craft Beer: Nelson also happens to be the craft beer capital of NZ (we're not at all biased...). There's a multitude of brewers near and far. The Sprig and Fern has several watering holes around Nelson and the Freehouse is a great place to sample many of the local brews. The original is to be found over the Takaka Hill: The Mussel Inn.
Wineries: Last count, 26 in the area. We suggest a thorough investigation into all. Especially Neudorf if pinot is your thing.
Restaurants: Where to start? Down the hill water side is the Boat Shed and the Boat House - both over the water, and three more besides, max drive four minutes. In town, Hopgoods is our fav, it and Urban Oyster have just won awards. All in all, we reckon once you count,Nelson restaurants, the winery restaurants, the Mapua restaurants, the ones in Richmond, and all the Thai places, you could eat out somewhere new everyday during a six month sabbatical. And pretty much enjoy every one.
Most favourite cafe ever: Raglan Roast at the bottom of the hill.
Food generally: there is a cornucopia of artisan cheese, seafood, fruit, veges, peanut butter and other yummies here. Best starting place is the Saturday Market, a full 6 minutes to drive down, another 6 to find a park if you're arriving after 9.30am. The breakfast crepes in the yellow trailer....hard to go past.... we're still addicted after five years.
Art: so personal - check out the Nelson Art Trail. We're slowly building our collection at Tiro Moana.
Or combine everything into the Art & Food Route on the Great Taste Trail.
Mountain Biking - so yeah, we do reckon Nelson is the MTB capital of the WORLD! Closest single track ride is 20 mins ride away (a bit more coming back up the hill home...). The most epic ride is still under research but we're very happy to share our current favourites with you. Sorry no gondolas for those hills out there. E's not cheating!
Also out there: Tramping, paragliding, rock climbing, SUP, kayaking...... We can hook you up.
