Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

The area of the Hokianga was recently listed as a Top 100 place in the world to visit by Time Magazine! Kohukohu was one of the first settlements in the Hokianga, rich in Maori and Pakeha culture, and is largely preserved both in architecture and history. Today Kohukohu ('Koke' to locals) is a quiet, picturesque village inhabited by many artists, poets, musicians, and a rugby team. Browse the art gallery, have a drink at the pub, or grab a quality coffee from the cafe. There is a self-guided historic walk around the village. A short ferry ride across the harbour takes you to Rawene, another small town rich in history, art, and a great over-the-water restaurant. A bit further on, you can learn about the history of Kupe the Voyager at the newly opened 'Footprints of Kupe' in Opononi (, or catch a water taxi here to ride the sand dunes. There are also the newly refurbished hot springs in Ngawha In the summer, walk the Wairere Boulders, and enjoy cooling off in their open swimming hole (

This is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed. The historical cottage was adorable and comfortable with a fantastic view across the harbour. Just wished I had taken the binoculars to see more and view the clear night sky (1% light pollution). The cottage was immaculately clean and the kitchen very well stocked and enabled us to prepare our Christmas lunch. The cottage location is a short historic walk to the village and a short drive to the ferry across to Rawere. It is a spectacular part of the country and if you haven't been up to the Hokianga then it is a must. The Kauri forrest and Tane Mahuta were definetly a highlight. I would highly recommend this cottage and great that our pup CeCe was able to be part of the adventure.

A very sweet old cottage that has been well maintained and feels like home thanks to the owners' many thoughtful touches and artistic flair. Everything you could need is provided and Glenda, the wonderful manager, keeps it spotless. Just a heads up though for those who may have mobility issues - there is quite a step up/down from/to the kitchen/bathroom section of the house and the shower is quite high up. Thank you for letting us and our two dogs enjoy a stay in this delightful home.
