There are a number of words currently used to describe the whole ‘green’ arena. Words such as sustainability, self sufficiency, carbon neutral, environmentally friendly, organic, clean and green, chemical free, energy efficient and ecological are all positive aspects of looking after our world that we encourage here at Broughton Lodge.

We are proud that our carbon footprint is lower than the land area of our property.

Some of the initiatives that we are currently using are

· Fuel efficient log burner

· Sustainable firewood tree cropping

· Recycling program including composting of organic materials

· Fully insulated home and modern hot water cylinder

· Thermal drapes

· Energy efficient appliances.

· Energy efficient Light bulbs

· Native bush regeneration

· Habitat planting

Some of the initiatives that we are working towards are
· Grey water recycling
· Retrofit double glazing
· Wetland restoration
· Green cleaning products
· Improving our carbon footprint even further

This is a working farm, however pets are welcome - we even have space for horses. Dogs are permitted if they are outside only and kept under control. Please advise with your booking enquiry if you plan on bringing a dog.

We absolutely loved our time here, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys getting off the beaten track. The highlight for me was probably getting to eat oysters right off the rocks. The other adults in our group just loved kayaking in the calm and picturesque bay, while my two young daughters were captivated by chasing crabs on the mud flats, looking at all the fruit trees, and watching the farm animals.
The weather didn't favour us, but we were plenty warm with the fire roaring. It was great to have it all ready to go on arrival - all I had to do was throw in a match. The house was really comfortable for us to potter around, with plenty of space for my 1yo and 3yo to play. We had to watch the 1yo around the stairs and the fireplace, but other than that it was fine to just let her explore.
You can access a (deserted) beach through a gate on the property that's only about 40 metres from the house. I'd recommend bringing water shoes rather than jandals, as the beach is a tidal mudflat so jandals get sucked off in the mud. We had a grand time tramping around in it, watching the various wildlife (including the delicious oysters). I wish I'd had time to collect some of the cockles out there - but three nights sped past way too quickly! We found the mud flat so much fun, but if you fancy a more traditional sandy beach, you can drive just a few minutes up the road to Te Mahia Bay.
It's just shy of an hour from the Picton Ferry, and half an hour to Havelock. We loved the Slip Inn in Havelock. They were all out of mussels when we went, but had wonderful pizzas and house-cured salmon. The kids meals there were really cool too, quite a change from the usual soggy chips and hotdogs that are usually foisted on the young.

A fabulous spot, with very kind and caring caretakers! We had a group get-together and were so happy that we abandoned plans to visit Picton and just stayed on the property instead. Beautiful views, and lovely short walks. The best part was arriving to a lovely warm house as the caretakers had put the fire on for us! Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway.
