There were pros and cons - pros are the great location, right across from the beach and boat ramp so was interesting watching the boats come and go. House had good heat pump so nice and warm. Kitchen lovely and new.
Bed in the main room is huge and very comfortable, linen is nice quality.
Cons - some parts of the house are rather run down, the bathroom especially, peeling paint on the ceiling, the toilet seemed to be missing the skirting boards? And had one of those toilet surround mats, so unhygienic in my opinion! Dish by the bathroom sink had a few old bits of soap in it, were we meant to use those?
The couches are quite old and dusty, tv in an odd position meaning you can’t view it from sitting on the couches.
All in all, was fine for a one night stay, expectations were just a bit higher for $160 a night.

What an awesome little place, amazing spot directly opposite the main launch ramp for the boats (very impressive); lovely hosts who made us feel at home.

We've stayed there for one night.
There were good things and bad things.
Location of The palace was perfect for us.
It is near South bay, located near the port where whale watching cruise and fishing tour ships have departed.
The host was friendly, helped us to cook crayfish that we've got from fishing tour.
The cottage has got almost everything we needed, laundary machine, hanger, washing powder, enough hot water for shower.

However, the place was too cold.
Inside the bed wasn't cold but the living room was freezing. It was late February, rainy and windy that day. Not a single heater was available.

Another one is utensils and kichen stuff were not well looked after.
The toaster was broken and out of order, some dishes were chipped.
Electric water boiler had some kind of white things accumulated inside, could not use it. I tried to wash it off but non- stop, somethings floating in the water.

And Sofa were full of dust when we sat on it unfortunately.

Otherwise neat and simple. The bed linen was clean well decorated cottage.

We stayed for 5 nights in November 2014 The weather was wet and wild but we were cosy and warm and entertained, this very affordable clean, comfortable, home is just a treasure, we had planned to set Cray-pots, go fishing but instead we had trips to all the magic eating places in Kaikoura , played a little golf, walked the many tracks around the coast line, but loved coming back to watch the boats coming and going from the slip-way . watching the whale boats taking people out in the wild big surf.
Thank you Graeme and Raylene you were wonderful hosts,
The Palace has everything you need for a great holiday

Fantastic place to stay - amazing views, very friendly hosts, comfortable beds, clean, tidy and warm house - I would totally recommend the house to anyone who is interested. A second property is also available next door so we have been thinking of hiring both houses as a group next time. As we stayed there in early spring there was only one boat that went out in the morning, so not too much noise disturbing the peace :-)
