About this Holiday House

Bay of Islands, Opua- seafarers, landlubbers alike will love the activity on the water below. Wonderful close views of Opua Bay and of Waitakere Inlet from this unique, luxury, three level pole constructed timber home crafted by a boat-builder as his home. Owned by ship's captain - numerous artifacts collected from his voyages decorate the house. Check out our other home Mariners Rest in Takapuna Auckland. Would consider negotiating a cheaper rate for longer term rentals in off season.

Wonderful close sea view of Opua Bay and all of the boating activity. All day sun on timber deck/BBQ area surrounded by native bush. Comfortable, private and secluded. Walk to Opua Marina, Boating Club, local supermarket and Opua Marina Cafe for your coffee fix and breakfast. CAPTAINS RETREAT – GUEST COMMENTS “…We had a wonderful time at Captains Retreat. Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

5 minute drive to Paihia village and beach where you can explore numerous water activities that the Bay of Islands is famous for. 10 minute drive to the historic Waitangi Treaty grounds and 18 hole Waitangi Golf course. The house is in walking distance from Opua Marina where you might wish to keep your boat. There is a boat launch ramp close by. Opua has all of the facilities a yachtie would want to dock, refit and maintain his boat including a choice of haul-outs, sailmaker, spar and mast rigger, marine engineers, chandlers and sailmakers. Coastal walk to Paihia starts from Opua Marina or take the Car Ferry across to Okiato and walk to Russell. Captains retreat is also right at the start of the Coast To Coast Rail Cycleway - one of New Zealand's best cycle trips. It is also close to the new Waitangi Mountain Bike Park which is a must for all keen cyclists.

Good morning Frank and Jenny, Now we are back home and reality has set back in .I would like to just say a big thank you for sharing your home away from home. It was a delightful experience. We had planned a number of things to do while we were there, in the Bay, and achieved most of them. The first morning by about 11am we realised that this house is dangerous for us, not in the normal sense, but the fact that you could so easily be absorbed and relax to such a degree that you don’t want to leave or break the relaxed state you are in. That, is a very special quality in a home. The views the ambience the decor all contribute. We certainly would look forward to coming back and taking some more. Thankyou to you both. Our big highlights while there, was the Cream trip, A day in the Bay and also the day spent at Russell. We viewed Te Oke bay and yes it is idyllic. So much more to do and see next time. We were lucky enough to spend 7 wonderful nights at Frank and Jennys wonderful home. The views were spectacular and the house was warm and friendly. It was a quiet location and had lots of birdlife close by. The General Store close by had yummy pizzas and other delicious goodies. The Opua Cruising club was a relaxing welcoming place to have a casual meal. We had our sons aged 12 and 15 and they loved the Captains Retreat. Why stay in Paihia when you can absolutely relax in stunning Opua in this lovely house.

Thank you for the wonderful week at Captain's Retreat over Christmas. The house had a really nice warm feel to it, the deck off the living room was lovely and sunny with a glorious view down the inlet. It was extremely comfortable and very relaxing. There is a great walk/running track at the bottom of the hill that takes you to Paihia which was really nice. It was also nice to be away from the touristy centre of Paihia which was a very easy drive to get to. Very enjoyable place to stay.
