Experience this unique, peaceful straw bale house nestled in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges. Located in a beautiful, quiet rural valley, the property has large lawns, an orchard and croquet lawn, as well as a river on the boundary with several good swimming holes.

Inside is spacious and inviting, with open-plan kitchen/dining and living areas. There are 4 bedrooms, accommodating up to 20 guests, 2 generous-sized bathrooms, 2 separate toilets, a study area with Wifi broadband and a table tennis table. The house is child-friendly, with fencing around the house, a cot and a highchair.

Perfect in winter for cosy evenings in front of the log fire or relaxing in the bath with a view of the garden. In summer, there are 5 acres to enjoy, where you can play croquet, swim in the river, relax on the deck or have a leisurely barbecue. You can also explore the many nearby walking tracks that the Tararuas have to offer.

This family-built straw bale house is built with respect for the environment. It generates its own electricity and sources water from a nearby spring. The thick straw bale walls and double glazing keep the cold out in winter and the house cool on the hottest summer’s day, making it a comfortable stay in all seasons.

Whether your group is large or small, this is a welcoming and versatile house that can accommodate your needs.

The house is available for functions, retreats and group gatherings by negotiation.

Such a wonderful place to stay! What a lovely eco house. Plenty of room for large groups. Lots to do to! My kids really loved the soccer field, nice touch!

Woah we (a big group of friends) had a amazing weekend. It's a great space for a big group. Things I loved: the amazing kitchen, well stocked and so much space; the deck is perfect for relaxing and taking in the scenery; so many reading nooks; so close to nice walks and swims; a compost bin.

It was great to have a really good written guide to the place -we knew where to find everything.

We felt like we were so far away from the rest of the world, but actually it was such an easy drive over from Wellington. We all said we'd love to come back at the end of the trip, and we will!

Mikimiki Lodge totally took our breath away. We felt like we had a bit part in Grand Designs. THe house's grand proportions, fantastic design and generous living and sleeping spaces were a pleasure to hang out in. We felt supremely well catered for- ours was a winter stay but we'll definitely be back in summer to enjoy river swims, more walks in the Tararuas, and this glorious glorious house.

The kids loved playing with all the games that was their and the lovely walk down to the river. It was cozy with the two fires going and the water was the best.
