About this Holiday House

Experience this unique, peaceful straw bale house nestled in the foothills of the Tararua Ranges. Located in a beautiful, quiet rural valley, the property has lawns, an orchard and croquet lawn, as well as a river on the boundary with swimming holes. Inside is spacious and inviting, with open-plan kitchen/dining and living areas. There are 4 bedrooms, accommodating up to 18 guests at a stretch (20 max; with one a marae style room with mattresses and duvets) 2 generous-sized bathrooms, 2 separate toilets, a study area with Wifi broadband and a table tennis table. The house is child-friendly, with fencing around the house, a cot and a highchair. We take 6 people at a minimum and 20 people maximum. No groups bigger than 20 are possible currently. Perfect in winter for cosy evenings in front of the log fire or relaxing in the bath with a view of the garden. In summer, there are 5 acres to enjoy, where you can play croquet, swim in the river, relax on the deck while kids bounce on the trampoline or have a leisurely barbecue. You can also explore the many nearby walking tracks that the Tararua ranges have to offer. This family-built straw bale house is built with respect for the environment. It generates its own electricity and sources water from a nearby spring. The thick straw bale walls and double glazing keep the cold out in winter and the house cool on the hottest summer’s day, making it a comfortable stay in all seasons. Whether your group is large or small, this is a welcoming and versatile house that can accommodate your needs. If you are more than 15 in your group, bring sleeping bags (or your own duvets for the mattresses). Please enquire in advance if you want tents. The house is available for functions, retreats and group gatherings by negotiation. Our quite large group had the loveliest 2 night stay at this property in July. It is well set up for big groups - plenty of space. We kept warm with the wood burner and found there was no problem cooking for a big group. It rained most of the weekend but we went for some (muddy!) walks and then dried out back at the house. Just a lovely ambience about the whole property - everyone commented on this - thank you!

This place is a dream! The photos do not do it justice at all. Would recommend to anyone, and would definitely stay again. It is spectacular, perfect for large (or small) groups - with lots to do and plenty of peace & quiet. Shenagh was fantastic to deal with and incredibly accommodating. It was perfect!!

What a great place to spend a few days, or a week, or more. We all wish we could just stay forever. Been before and will be back again.

Weekend pricing (friday and Saturday nights):
$360 per night for first 6 adults (with a 6 adult minimum charge for any booking), then $52 per person per night for all subsequent adults. Children aged 9 and under are $32 per night. Babies under a year are free. 25% discount for stays over 5 nights (applied to days 6 onward), but not during Christmas/New Year period.
A one-off cleaning fee of $100 per stay. However, for groups over 10 the cleaning fee increases to $120. It is a very big house to clean even with a few people, and rather more demanding a clean when there have been a lot of people staying. The price reflects this.

Weekday pricing (Monday to Thursday nights):
$340 for first 6 adults, $47 each extra adult and $27 for each child.

Holiday period pricing:
The house is often booked out by large groups for extended periods, and we're keen to make sure the house is used to its potential. Given this, we require a minimum stay of 3 nights and minimum group sizes of 8 adults over holiday periods, long weekends, Christmas and New Year and early January and Easter or Queens birthday weekend Anzac or Labour weekend for example. Our charges are slightly higher at $506 over the summer holiday period (20 December to 27 January) as we have very high demand. This also incurs a $38 per night per child charge. Please get in touch if you have questions.

Cancellations and refunds:
There will be no refunds for cancellations made within a month of the rental date unless another booking is secured. Partial refunds are possible prior to the stay if, for example, one person pulls out of a group booking, but no refunds are made after the stay.
