Bonnieux Cottage (pronounced “bon yur”)

Historic early Wairarapa cottage built in about 1878. Five minutes walk from Martinborough's Square and opposite one of the village’s earliest wooden churches. Three minutes walk from the town swimming pool.

Fully self contained with three bedrooms and two bathrooms (one ensuite). Sleeps 5 in two queen bedrooms and a single bedroom. Wood panelled lounge and two attic rooms to explore and relax in.

The cottage was added to in the early 1900s with a large open plan kitchen and dining room, plus a second sitting area and large bathroom.

The cottage contains many original features including old totara and matai floors, wood paneling in the lounge and hallway, exposed wooden feature walls in the front bedrooms and a narrow, hand carved totara staircase.

Decor and furnishings are all of high quality and add to the feeling of being in a beautifully restored, early New Zealand home.

The kitchen includes microwave and a full range of crockery, cutlery, glassware, cookware, serving dishes and an espresso coffee machine. The dining table seats six.

The lounge, kitchen and the main bedroom have widescreen TVs with Freeview and Sky TV, including movies and sport. The lounge also has a blu-ray DVD and an inbuilt woodburner. A heat pump looks after the temperature in the open plan kitchen-dining room.

There's a CD player in the dining room and bedside radios in the two queen bedrooms.

The main bathroom has a clawfoot bath, toilet and separate shower. The ensuite bathroom has a shower and toilet.

Other facilities include a washing machine, ironing board and iron, and heaters in every room. All beds have electric blankets and Egyptian cotton sheets.

French doors from the dining room open onto a private sheltered deck with outside table, seating for six and a gas BBQ. This area is surrounded by jasmine and wisteria and is perfect for outdoor entertaining at most times of the year.

Further outdoor areas include seats on the front verandah and a seating area at the back of the house with table and chairs. The gardens at the front and the back of the house are full of flowers and climbing roses. There is also a petanque court and a set of boules.

Off-street parking.

Smokefree.

Continental breakfast supplies are included.

Free Wi-FI is available throughout the cottage

The narrow, steep stairs to the attic and the historic nature of the cottage might mean it is unsuitable for small children.

Usual check-in and check-out times are 1.00 p.m. and 11.00 a.m. respectively.

We prefer two night bookings at weekends.

If Bonnieux Cottage is not available you can also stay next door at Lacoste Cottage. See HolidayHouses Ref # 11449 or www.lacostecottage.co.nz

My wife and I shared Bonnieux Cottage with another couple in order to attend Martinborough's annual Meandering Lunch. Bonnieux and its slightly smaller sibling, Lacoste Cottage (next door), are now firm family favourites. With our children, we've spent two very enjoyable Summers holidaying at Lacoste, with one shorter stay at Bonnieux, and intend to repeat all of the above, as and when. In our experience, cottage rentals don't get much better than this.

Beautiful property, photos do not do the inside justice at all. It was pretty cold but the heat pump and fire warmed the place up well. Definitely recommend.

Bonnieux Cottage is absolutely delightful! My girlfriends and I spent a fantastic girls weekend at Bonnieux Cottage in September and we loved everything about the home. The bedrooms are gorgeous and cosy, the fire was ready to be lit and the fridge was stocked with breakfast goodies. It was lovely and clean and toasty warm. There is a big bath tub in the main bathroom, and lots of extra special niceties (like lavendar bath foam) to be spoilt with. It is a lovely old home, spotlessly clean and decorated with an eclectic mix of old, newish, NZ and French style furniture which works beautifully. We would definitely go back again and cant wait for the opportunity. A big thanks to the owner who was really helpful and made us feel very special.

The photos do not do it justice, it was more impressive than they indicated.
We wanted for nothing, and were particulary impressed by all the extra touches, including all the 'back ups' ie 2 gas bottles in the BBQ, rolls and rolls of toilet paper, books, TVs, expresso machine and coffee included etc
With breakfast included, and a pantry/fridge full of staples, we could get onto the important business of visiting the vineyards
Would highly recommend this cottage to couples or families, we could not find fault with it, and it will be a hard act to follow for us booking accommodation in other towns.

My wife & I have just spent a wonderful three nights staying in this pioneer cottage as a base for visiting the Wairarapa region. Bonnieux Cottage is particularly delightful to stay in and has been decorated and furnished beautifully. The gardens are very well designed with three outdoor seating and table areas provided, a sheltered BBQ deck too and lighting at night really attractive. We arrived (good instructions provided) to find fresh bread & milk in place while a look through the cupboards confirmed that most everything was on hand, even cereals. The bedrooms were tastefully furnished, the lounge area very comfy with the fireplace set ready to light. We resorted to using the heatpump. Everything has been considered as far as comfort, warmth, interest, cleanliness - we could not have chosen a better place to stay and am sure we will return.
Martinborough is situated in the heart of the Wairarapa wine region which we took full advantage of! Attractive wineries situated in beautiful countryside provided great cellar door service and a chance to experience some wines that are only available at source. Wairarapa wines are promoted at local restaurants; menus and service equal to any major city.
Lunch at Lake Ferry pub is a must as too is a visit to Cape Palliser Lighthouse with its attendant seal colony.
Thank you Matthew & Linden for such a pleasurable experience.
