Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

Relax on the deck, or in the sunny conservatory and enjoy the ever changing sea in all her moods. Watch the boats and soaring seabirds going about their daily activities. Be amazed by our night skies and wake up to spectacular sunrises (and sunsets) that truly deserve the term "glowing skies". Stewart Island is renowned for its uncluttered beaches and clear water. Walk down the private driveway, and in 2 minutes you will be sinking your feet into the clean golden sand of Butterfields Beach. This is a fabulous beach for the young and young at heart! Birdlife abounds throughout Akomoana's private garden and the surrounding native bush on the property. Be delighted by frequent bird visitors: tui, tomtits, cheeky and gregarious kakas (parrot), tuneful bellbirds and shy robins; most are seen at Akomoana daily. Kiwi are seen occasionally. Akomoana enjoys the benefits of relative isolation, surrounded by nature, yet a few minutes' walk or drive to Oban township. Unpack and settle in, then feel yourself unwind and relax in this comfortable self-contained home. The township and wharf are only a casual 15-20 minute walk (dependent on age and fitness level- including some hills) along Horseshoe Bay Road, with points of interest along the way. Pause at Mill Creek, the site of an early 1800's sawmill, to watch kingfishers on the fuchsia tree, or herons (even white ones) stealthily wading its dark waters. Venture onto Mapua Road to the cemetery, with great views and historic headstones reflecting the island's past. Or follow the sign posted track to tranquil Bathing Beach. Once in the township, all activities are accessible from here. Visit the general store for supplies (they can deliver), check out the Information Centre to book fishing trips, hire a scooter, e-bike or mountain bike, learn about NZ's earliest European history at the museum, feel the warmth and conviviality of The Snuggery, the last cafe before Scott Base! Boat cruises and a bus tour are easy ways to experience more of Rakiura's wonderful natural heritage and recent human history. Visit the famous South Sea Hotel to quench your thirst or enjoy our famous blue cod on the menu. For a gold coin you can purchase a day walks leaflet from the Dept. of Conservation Centre. So much to do, you'll wish that you had booked for longer....

Neat and tidy, unmatchable view and location. Scrabble and a bluetooth speaker made our teenager happy. Highly recommend!

Lovely being close to the beach. Great to have use of a vehicle to seat 7. Warm and cosy.

Our stay at Akomoana was "Magical". The house was cosy, comfortable and had the most stunning views over Horseshoe Bay. It was perfect for 2 couples and was close enough to walk into town and do local walks which were amazing ! The local pub is worth a visit and had a cosy atmosphere. Thank you to Fi for a warm Stewart Island welcome! We really hope to return next year. Antoinette , Andy and Belinda and Paul Victoria, Australia
