Where is Tokomaru Bay? 91km north of Gisborne, with 8km of pristine coastline , it's just beautiful. Tokomaru Bay is popular with artists, musicians and craftspeople, interesting people doing interesting things — some people call Toko "the craft centre of the coast". Famous local: Baye Riddell, renowned Maori ceramicist, he sells his work in his art shop at the wharf in Waima, just up the north end of the bay. There's an art shop "Toi" just across from the public toilets, on Beach road. They have work of a variety of artists, worth a look. I have a sea glass gallery on site, 'Para Pounamu', which offers art, craft, & Jewellery. Horse sports and equestrian events are popular, The Kaiaua beach races for horses a run in early January. Pa Wars is where a full day of sporting events are run, in early january every year, encouraging all whanau , including those living away from the area to return, and represent their marae in sporting competitions.
