Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

Our property is on the Opara riverfront and the birdlife is abundant, including fantails (piwakawaka), wood pigeons (kereru), bellbirds (korimako), NZ kingfisher (kotare), pukeko, white-faced heron, spur-winged plovers, pied (torea) and black oystercatchers, pied stilt (poaka), California quail, Australasian harrier (kahu), many types of ducks including the paradise shellduck (putangitangi)...the list goes on and on. We advise you to visit a supermarket in Christchurch or Akaroa to buy fresh ingredients as we are a self-catering guesthouse. The small store in Okains Bay can provide you with basic supplies, such as milk, sugar etc. but has limited opening hours. Coming from Christchurch there is a New World supermarket in Halswell, just a few kilometers out of Christchurch on SH 75. Akaroa has a Four Square supermarket. Coming from Mount Cook/Lake Tekapo there are supermarkets in Geraldine and Ashburton. The Okains Bay Store is open daily, and also nightly in the Summer for fish and chips (non-Summer F&C available on Saturday nights from 4-7 pm). Okains Bay is a small community of approximately 100 residents in the Banks Peninsula, only a 20-minute drive from the flourishing French town of Akaroa with grocery and shops. Akaroa is famous for its swimming with the dolphins, dolphin watching, sailing trips, fine dining and is a lovely and quaint township with French heritage. We are happy to advise you on the choice of operators. The exceptional Museum known for its Maori and Colonial collector's items lovingly cared for by locals is a must-see when visiting Okains Bay. The museum was recently featured on The Heritage Restoration TV show. There is a tennis court available nearby for a few dollars per use. We have a small supply of tennis rackets available for hire if you'd like to give it a go. There is a large children's playground with flying fox close to the beach. Our property is river-front and there are nice flat walking loops for all ability levels, including our favourite which is a 1 hour 10 minute walk down the riverbank (at low to mid-tide), across the beach to the volcanic caves, and down the charming country road back to your home away from home. Spectacular!
