From Mt Herbert Cottage it is a 15 minute walk to the central café area of Diamond Harbour and from there a short stroll down to the wharf where the Diamond Harbour / Lyttelton ferry departs regularly to the port town of Lyttelton. Lyttelton is a fun, dynamic town to visit and spend a day. There are plenty of shops to enjoy, great cafe's, restaurants and art galleries. Each Saturday morning from 10am-1pm Lyttelton hosts a wonderful Farmers Market, a must do.
Diamond Harbour is a wonderful, peaceful, coastal community and a great place to relax and unwind. There is something for everyone. There are walks to enjoy (Mt Herbert walkway is a 3 1/2 hour walk and can be started from the cottage), gorgeous beaches for swimming or picnics, harbour cruises, Quail Island day trips (from Lyttelton), cafe's and restaurants in Diamond Harbour and Governors Bay and wonderful scenic drives around the neighbouring Banks Peninsula bays.
For those gardening enthusiast, Sir Miles Warren's 'Ohinetahi Gardens' at Governors Bay is a must visit.
