One of the best ways to explore this area is on two wheels. The Hauraki Rail Trail, part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, is a 82km ride that links Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha and Waihi. Completed in late 2012, the 2-3-day ride follows the historic railway corridor which has resulted in a flat, wide, offroad trail. The trail showcases the area’s pioneering past and passes by old mining relics, the Karangahake Gorge and character pubs and cafés. ‘World famous in New Zealand’,
For a delightful day trip, take a drive around the Coromandel. The drive around this volcanic peninsula is absolutely stunning as the road clings to the ocean for many parts, then diverts inland into beautiful native bush and mountains with many places to stop along the way for an awesome day!
Waihi is a fantastic base for nearby attractions and events such as the Paeroa Battle of the Streets Motorcycle Race and the Whangamata Beach Hop.
