Special Amenities

The deck was rebuilt and extended so you can walk straight on to the beach. One third of the deck is covered to provide ultra violet light protection and wind protection for comfortable outdoor dining. An outdoor dining table and benches along with a new infra red barbecue are positioned under the covered part of the deck. A large and comfortable bali lounger is on the uncovered part of the deck. A wonderful place to curl up and read a book, have a nap, or gaze at the stars and listen to the sea - while snuggled up with a hot water bottle and cup of tea, or perhaps a glass of wine. A couple more steps takes you straight off the deck on to the beach. Our wonderful tuscan stone table and heavy wooden benches sits at the edge of the beach. We love dining here for appetizers or early evening meals when the days are warm and still, and the sun has mellowed. A great place from which to admire the ruby coloured sunsets that gives the Bay its name, and to watch the town of Nelson light up across the bay.

Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

Close to beaches, mountains and bush, and to beautiful vineyards, wonderful cafes, local craft markets, and artisan studios! The Great Taste Cycle Trail is virtually at your doorstep, Tasman & Green Acre Golf Courses are an easy drive away, as are Nelson city, the Richmond Forest Park & the must-visit Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks! Ruby Bay is located amongst fruit and wine growing areas of the Tasman region and set between Nelson and Motueka. It is central to three national parks, the famous Mapua wharf, wineries, award-winning eateries, fishing, boating, beaches, arts, crafts and plenty of natural spaces with stunning scenery. The beach stretches in one direction down to Mapua and in the other, along to Kina Peninsular. The Ruby Coast road takes you through Tasman and Kina where you can discover more beaches, a golf course, picturesque picnic spots, cafes, galleries and wineries. The coastal village of Mapua is only a five minute drive away from the house, and is lovely. It offers a collection of waterfront restaurants, galleries, boutique shops, a brewery, a ice-cream parlour and one of the best fish and chip shops in the country (the Smokehouse)! Sit and relax, eat and drink, watch the local children jumping off the wharf into the ocean, or take the ferry across to Rabbit Island. During the summer months there is often live outside music playing at the Golden Bear Brewery, or inside at the Rimu Wine Bar. You can also hire bikes from the Mapua Wharf to go for a ride on the Great Taste Trail – take in the sea views and visit wineries and art galleries along the way. The fabulous Tasman's Great Taste Trail cycle way passes right past the fence of Mapua Beach House. Whatever your level of fitness there are plenty of cycling options. Riding your bike from our place over to the famous Jesters House cafe for lunch or afternoon tea is also a pleasant easy ride on a warm day (and feed the eels). Many people hire bikes and take them on the ferry to Rabbit Island and cycle to the fabulous sandy beach on the other side. It’s an easy ride and a great way to spend an afternoon. Or just drive over to Rabbit Island and enjoy a long walk along this excellent beach, or swim in the waves and lie on the sand. Other nearby places to visit is the Moutere Valley, where you'll find wonderful vineyards and artisans, including the Neudorf vineyard and the Old Post Office Store full of beautiful arts and crafts (about a 15 minute drive). And you may also consider a drive over the hill to Golden Bay (about a 2 hour drive) to visit the cute and funky town of Takaka, wonderful beaches, and of course plenty of local art and craft studios. The lovely city of Nelson has much to offer and is only a 30 minute drive away. Visiting the famous Nelson fair on a Saturday morning is well worth the trip, and is filled with excellent arts and crafts, and great food to eat there or take home. The superb Suter Art Gallery and the World of Wearable Arts (WOW) and Collectable Cars Museum Gallery are wonderful to visit and admire the works on display. Both these galleries each have a cafe and a shop selling local art, jewellery and other fine creations. There really is so much to do in this region and something for everyone. Whether you want to sit back and relax, or whether you want adventure and action, it's on offer here.
