About this Holiday House

O- the place of. Karito - many bull rushes. Our place, last on the seaward side is a two bedroom cedar clad holiday home built on the site of our old crib at the edge of the beach with elevated views over the Tasman Sea, Okarito Lagoon, River mouth, Te Kohuamaru Bluff plus the Southern Alps. A great base for visits to nearby Franz Josef Glacier and lakes. (15-20 minutes drive.) It's a self-clean holiday home, bring your own linen/towels, duvets supplied. There's an efficient log burner to keep you cozy too. Okarito Lagoon is the largest unmodified wetland in New Zealand. A short (2 minute) walk to the beach with the sounds and smell of the sea. Tui and Bell Birds are in the surrounding bush along with a gallery of bird species about the township, and lagoon. The Okarito Trig gives the finest view of the Southern Alps, Aoraki Mt Cook and Mount Tasman. An old description, Okarito with it's bush fringed lagoon, haunt of the White Heron sacred to the Maori and backdrop of the towering peaks of the Southern Alps, no other gold town rivaled it in beauty save perhaps Queenstown. Tea and coffee are supplied for your arrival. Note: SHOES OFF INSIDE PLEASE- slippers supplied for your comfort. Please leave the place as you found it, (cleaning bond refund). Beehive on site.

Please be aware that this place is different than it is portrayed! We booking in for 3 nights and moved out after one. There was two plastic bags of dry wood in the squalor under the house and then only unseasoned firewood and treated timber available. The large (and only appropriate space) in the kitchen that is shown in photo for food storage is locked and unavailable. There was mould on the kitchen windows. We were happy to bring our own linen but who would think to bring their own shower mat? Correspondence with the owner resulted in him making all number of unwarranted assumptions of our character. .Okarito is a beautiful place filled with good people. I would recommend you stay with them. It seemed that our experience with the owners surprised no one in the community. When we tried the next morning to find another more welcoming place to stay that had firewood we experienced nothing but helpfulness and support. We had a great time in Okarito. This bach is in a good location. One of the best places on earth. It is unwelcoming and overpriced. It cost us $340 for 2 nights not stay here and that was money well spent.
Response from Owner
Over the years we have happily shared our special place with many New Zealanders, overseas folk, friends and repeat visitors, establishing a reputation of having a tidy well equipped holiday house with some of the grandest views in the village. The result, many delightful emails of thanks from guests leaving with precious memories of a wonderful stay. I have been a visitor to Okarito since 1978 and got to know some of the locals, many have become close friends and mentors. We owned a crib on our site since 1985 and replaced it with a new building on 2 metre piles in 2013, underneath is an open area for my car, some stored lumber, the rainwater tank and dry firewood (Macrocarpa, Totara, Silver Pine and a stack of cut up last summer Douglas Fir). Before and after every guest’s stay the manager, a trusted friend checks all is in order. (They also own guest accommodation). We were saddened and stunned as it is the first time to get an email from a visitor stating they abandoned their stay. Concerned I contacted some people to investigate and advise us on the matters raised in the email, one checked the firewood. The conclusion is the concerns raised (firewood and cupboard space) in the message were unjustified and we politely informed them. The manager reported having to clean up some things after they had departed. There is no squalor or mould on the windows, we hope that the unjustified colourful comments and personal attack posted here by this person will not put anyone off. We will keep doing our best for the wonderful people who have stayed and will stay in the future. The guests from the stay before this described our place as perfect. Thank you, regards David and Rachel.

A very nice kiwi Bach with views to die for. Has everything you could need. Would recommend it and would certainly stay again if the occasion arises.
Response from Owner
You are most welcome Jennifer.

Beautiful spot overlooking the beach. Great for sunsets. Has it's own little track down to the beach. Very comfortable. Could do with a couple more insect screens on windows. We will stay there again.
Response from Owner
Thanks Fergus for your comments, I thought about the insect screens when fitting them, the decision being that the air flow was pretty good and adding more screens would obscure the beautiful views...and I couldn't bear to do that. Regards, David.
