About this Holiday House

Okarito Kiwi Cottage is located on the corner of The Strand and Russell St. in the heart of the village of Okarito - home to about 30 residents. Just steps away to 3 amazing forest tracks and the beach of the wild Tasman Sea. It is convenient to Okarito Boat Tours and kiwi tours. It is a simple and cozy cottage with open fireplace nestled in amongst the trees and a nice big green space out back. Kiwi Cottage has a great lookout from the little front porch -best sunny spot with a cuppa in the morning and the sun coming up across the field. We love this area and are keen conservationists - please join us on one of our Okarito Boat Tours to see some of the New Zealand's largest untouched wetland - a haven for many birds which make it their feeding grounds and home - including the beautiful Great White Herons and Royal Spoonbills amongst the rarer species such as Australasian Bitterns and Fernbirds. And be sure to take a nocturnal trip into the forest with Okarito Kiwi Tours to watch for the native Okarito Kiwi. Kiwi Cottage is a great little place to call home while you're exploring Okarito.

Expect a holiday like the 'old days' - everything you need and none of the things you don't! Very comfortable and peaceful for a couple and could cater easily for two children also. Excellent service and support from Paula and Swade. Highlights were lagoon tour with Swade, the trig walk and the raw energy of the sea. Make sure you take all food essentials, but sandfly repellent is locally made and available. Notwithstanding the first comment - the ice cream smoothies and boil in bag meal hit the spot! Easily could have extended our two night stay. Extremely reasonable charges. Definitely warrants a return visit to the area and the bach/crib
Response from Owner
Thank you Allan and it was our pleasure to have you both stay and just enjoy yourselves so much! Love to have you back, thank you for leaving the cottage so perfectly tidy as well, so much appreciated. All the best to you and Judy from both Swade and I and hope to see you again!

Because of the severe flooding on the West Coast, we were unable to make it to Okarito. We can't comment on the cottage, but we can say that Paula has been so understanding about us not being able to rent the cottage. She has been brilliant! We are determined to get to Okarito and rent the cottage - and I bet it will receive a five-star rating!
Response from Owner
Thank you Lindsay! I feel I have gotten to know you, even though you could not make it here -but I know you will one day and look forward to that very much! We are all sunshine'y days here since the storm, but the bridge is still out at the Waiho. Another 2 weeks to go it sounds like but we welcome any one-way travelers! Many thanks again Lindsay and hope you have enjoyed the rest of your time on the South Island with no more interruptions!

A great little batch, everything you need in a basic Kiwi batch kind of way. Some little maintenance jobs are needed (eg. one window doesn't close and a socket has a wobbly switch), but overall it's very peaceful and well located. Okarito is a calm, relaxed place, and Paula and Swade are lovely and very helpful.
Response from Owner
HI! thanks so much for your comments - indeed, we have a latch on its way (such is life out here - no corner hardware store when you need one!) and the switch must be recent - I just noticed it today actually - but it's always good to get feedback as things like this can be overlooked. We are onto them! So pleased you enjoyed your stay in the wee cottage and Okarito, all the best, Paula
