About this Holiday House

This is the ultimate kiwi bach experience – retro and quirky but also quiet, sunny, warm, and comfortable – the perfect private holiday retreat. Swimming, surfing, fishing, walking, birdwatching, kayaking and more... all within easy reach. Or head to Dunners for dinner, a gig, the movies or retail therapy, just a half-hour drive away. Karitane is a small seaside town – just a half-hour drive north of Dunedin's CBD – with beautiful landscapes, seascapes and unspoiled beaches. It's a delight to explore. The fully furnished bach is rather retro but is bright and sunny with an open-plan kitchen/living area. The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed with space for a portacot. The smaller single bedroom has two single beds. The sleepout also has two singles that can join together to make a king bed (as in photo). Off-street parking in a carport is available, together with room to park a boat or caravan on the wide, mowed roadside of the no-exit street. Sky TV with Sky Sport is available.

Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

A short walk away is the picturesque wharf, usually with a handful of fishing boats moored close by. The Karitane cafe/general store offers coffee, fresh baked goods, fruit, vegetables, wine, local cheeses, some takeaways etc. A few minutes' drive north is the small town of Waikouaiti, with quirky second-hand shops, a bakery, hotel, fish and chip/Chinese takeaway shop, great cafe, and library with free internet access. The nearby historic buildings at Matanaka and the museum are fascinating local attractions. A 20 minute drive south, above Blueskin Bay is the 307-hectare Orokonui Ecosanctuary – the only place on mainland South Island of New Zealand where endangered native birds like the Tokoeka kiwi, tuatara and insects can live a life safe from predators. Enjoy the walking tracks or guided tours, and the superb architecture of the visitor centre/cafe.

Angela Cassidy
A fantastic old-style bach, with lots of sun, light, a great outlook, comfortable beds, and a well set-up kitchen - exactly as described in the listing and photos. We enjoyed a very peaceful week and made good use of proximity to lots of great beaches. Sue was great to deal with and very friendly, prompt and helpful in her communication.
