Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

Railway Station Cafe is an easy walk with a fine selection of foods, open from 09:30 to 16:00 daily. Waihi Beach is an easy 15 minute drive with its numerous cafes and good surf. The Karangahake Gorge is a gold mining heritage site and is voted as one of the 101 must do's for Kiwis. Waihi has an impressive working Gold mine with an interactive display at the visitor centre. There are numerous golf courses in the area and in the summer months we have numerous festivals and events in the local towns with some of the best Trout fishing in New Zealand in our local streams and rivers. Waikino is a small town situated in the North Island of New Zealand nestled in the Southern end of a gorge alongside the Ohinemuri River, between Waihi and the Karangahake Gorge. The Waikino district lies at the base of the ecologically sensitive Coromandel Peninsula with its vast tracts of lush subtropical rainforests, steep ravines and fast moving rivers and streams. "Waikino" is Maori and means "water in a gorge' History Gold mining around Waikino has a history dating back to early colonisation of New Zealand. Waikino was the focal point of Gold mining in the Waikato- Bay of Plenty district with the 1897 construction of the Victoria Battery on the edge of what was a busy town supporting the expansive local Mining industry. Waikinos Victoria Battery processed ore from the large Martha Mine in Waihi. The Victoria Battery was then New Zealand's largest Industrial Complex, besides processing ore, it supported carpenters shops, a sawmill and a foundry. With 200 stamps, the Battery was the largest quartz crushing plant for gold extraction in Australasia and was capable of crushing over 812 tonnes of ore each day to the consistency of sand. The loud thumping sounds of crushing rock could be heard 10 kms away. Up the scenic Waitekauri road 5 km behind Waikino, once existed the mining town of Waitekauri, near Golden Cross. Waitekauri is no longer there today because the town was demolished at the end of that eras gold rush, consequently the village reverted to farmland. The local Waitekauri watering hole, the historic two storied Golden Cross Hotel, was literally transported to Waihi where it stands proud today as a reminder of days gone by.

Lovely, secluded little place which was private but at the same time the hosts were just down the driveway if you needed them. Don't be put off by the eco loo not much different than a normal toilet. Loved the warm fire, it was definitely a stormy weekend! Would absolutely go again.

Cute cottage in a wonderful garden setting. Ideally situated to explore the Karangahake Gorge and nearby trails and attractions. Quiet location that feels remote yet within 10 mins of Waihi town with eateries and a great supermarket. Wish we had more time to stay longer - highly recommended.

This cottage is a gem. It's quiet, very clean, quaint and the bed is comfortable. Also, the hosts allow one-night stays, which is a boon if you are travelling. The garden beside the cottage is wonderful - the whole place is picture-book perfect, really.
