About this Holiday House

waterfront cottage COD COTTAGE is a self contained kiwistyle basic bach and is the brown one in the photo, it is two bedroomed and ideal for 4 (but can sleep 6 if the pullout sofa is used) Sometimes available is also a selfcontained caravan next door (the green one in photo) which sleeps 4. So maximum if using both is 10.Please ask about "Penthouse" if interested Both have a large private lawn and garden with safe swimming shell beach right at front door. locations like this are rarely available. kayaks, dinghy and bikes are sometimes available to borrow, there is a BBQ available but we recommend you bring your own hotplate liner ( handy reusable ones are available from the Warehouse) as not everyone's standard of cleanliness is the same. Penthouse caravan was originally built by CI Munro caravans for permanent living it is ideal for 2 but can sleep 4 using pullout sofa. Renting this too when available may be an ideal option for large families or friends wanting to holiday together, but still be private and selfcontained for a great summer holiday right on the seafront. An awesome spot for a weekend break. Very relaxing and we loved having easy access to the sea.

And you are just the sort of folk we like to share it with!! Thanks for leaving it so tidy!!!

This is the perfect place to stay for relaxing and sightseeing around Banks Peninsula. It's peaceful, quiet and tranquil, away from the hustle and bustle of Akaroa but close enough to visit for lunch or dinner. The views are gorgeous especially loved waking up in the mornings and watching the tide come in and listen to the birds. There is a lovely sunny deck with a table and bbq with great views across the bay. We used the dinghy a couple times and the bikes, loving these free extras! The birdlife is wonderful and there is a fantastic walk from the front door, along the waterfront and up Onawe which is a truly magical place. It's handy to Devauchelle pub, is private without feeling crowded by neighbours or a busy road. There is everything you need at the bach, we did most of our cooking there, and our hosts were so friendly and helpful without being intrusive. If you want to get away from it all and get back to nature this is a special home away from home.

As described on it’s web site, a very, very basic kiwi batch. A sound knowledge about, or experience of living in the style of “fifties NZ) batch dwellings would be a real advantage. Being located against the bush line you could expect there to be some unwelcome night visitors but with the right attitude................Location is good for exploring the area or going into Akaroa and the shop and other facilities were handy. We enjoyed fine and warm weather and so were able to deal with Cod Cottage’s limitations.

Thankyou for your feedback, but we were very disappointed in it as we felt it unfair. We did understand from your booking that you were a retired couple from the Auckland area looking at exploring our part of the world, - that is great - we are proud of it and it needs more than a quick trip from Christchurch to explore - you did the right thing staying 4 nights and are glad you found our location handy. But we seriously wonder why you did not settle for a motel if you just needed a place to sleep but chose what we have to offer which is more suited to families who really enjoy what is available to them ie privacy, large lawn area for kids and adults to play, free use of bikes and kayaks, fishing on waterfront across the road at high tide, swimming etc and is a no frills minimum housework waterfront bach with a great view for a fussfree holiday. It is a great location for the right couples or families and I hope your comments and 1 star rating will not put them off..We have really tried to be honest on the web and you seem to have taken it on board... So why did you book it???? There is a huge variation in what is offered in our area in holiday houses these days from basic bachs to huge modern houses built as future retirement or holiday homes to offset mortgages. Cod was built in the 1990's not the 50's as you have suggested or for any of the above mentioned reasons and has everything required for a carefree family holiday. As for night visitors- we did warn in the folder to be read on arrival that mice are always looking for a nice warm winter place to hide and to please keep doors closed in autumn to prevent them getting in. This would be the norm in rural areas where field mice also live, and we supply traps to deal with them if necessary- which it appears you did -after you had let them in! Well done! I am just sorry you did not phone us on one of the numbers left for you if you encountered a problem. There was someone living elsewhere on the property who could have helped you for the entire duration of your stay if you had just asked, or if you had any issues with nocturnal visitors we could have loaned you our cat!!! I am assuming it is mice you are referring to? If not, then you should really have called us or the police - there is one in Akaroa!
