About this Holiday House

The Black Bach and The Hobbit House are typically "New Zealand the Way it Used to Be" The baches are uniquely positioned on a large tree clad, section in the heart of the Ohiwa sand spit between the ocean beach and the harbour. Just 50 metres away, the sheltered Ohiwa harbour is renowned for its mangroves, shellfish, flounder and sunsets. 50 metres northwards takes you to the surf beach with its safe swimming, superb surf casting and abundant bird life. The spacious back yard is private and sunny and protected from the ocean breeze. Tui and kereru feed and roost on our fruit trees all summer. The Black Bach sleeps a maximum of five people. It has one bedroom with a queen bed that opens onto the western back veranda and a single bed and a double sofa bed in the living area which opens to the sunrise on the deck beneath the Pohutukawa tree overlooking the front lawn. The kitchen is well equipped and the living space light and airy. "The Hobbit House" is ideal for Grandma and Grandad or an extra couple and is tucked away at the rear of the property. This basic but cosy dwelling was originally the boat shed but now comprises of a double bed and its own tiny bathroom and kitchen. It opens onto an outdoor table beneath the (usually laden) grape vine and the communal BBQ area This can be rented in conjunction with the main cottage but, to ensure your privacy, will NEVER be rented separately. Both baches have been decorated with warmth and creativity thus retaining the "traditional bach" atmosphere but ensuring they are bright and sunny. There is a minimum stay of 3 nights. There is no shop and no television!!.

Our family and I have had the privilege of staying a number of times usually around January for a week or 2, It really is an amazing slice of paradise, as soon as you've emptied the car and parked the boat, you enter the bach and feel at home and relaxed. It's so Kiwi and so full of personal touches, our family really values all the effort Karen has put into making it a home and then sharing it with us. The back yard is a hidden tropical oasis , you can sit on the deck and watch the world go by and share the view with Kereru, Tui and local Weka. Fishing is amazing, amenities are awesome. We really feel like part of the family and feel right at home, cheers Karen
Such a joy to discover the stunning Ohiwa Beach and Karen's cottage couldn't be handier to the dunes. An incredibly well positioned, tidy and well stocked bach with everything we needed to have a wonderfully relaxing 5 night stay. Would love to return sometime.

Loved staying here .... had a warm 'well loved' feeling walking into this bach. Had everything we needed for our time away from home. Loved the fruit, vegetables and herbs growing in the gardens and the colourful mosaics inside and out ! Beach so close! Next time we'll take more family down to enjoy it. Owner great to deal with. Thanks!
