Nearby attractions & activities
Plenty of local attractions, from the Waipara wineries, olive and lavender farms, jet boating on the Waimakariri river, hot air ballooning, fishing (salmon and trout), restaurants and cafes, shopping, rural crafts galore. The "garden city" of Christchurch is a 20 minute drive and has many attractions, such as the International Antarctic Centre and Haaglund Ride (spend a day, feed the penguins), swimming pools (with hydro slides, indoor and outdoor pools), Hanmer Springs thermal reserve, many beaches, 'The Square’ with a superb aquarium, the historic cathedral, and traditional tram ride, bicycling (it's flat – so it's great!), Tramping/Hiking - day trips or longer, Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens (40 hectares in the middle of Christchurch City), Canterbury Museum (a fantastic collection of old and new, natural history, early inhabitation, a wonderful Antarctic section... lots!), the Christchurch Casino (they'll take your money 24 hours a day!), restaurants galore and all tastes, several wildlife reserves (see Kiwis in a noctarium), golf, several course catering for all handicaps, punting on the River Avon (how refined!), Mount Cavendish Gondola (with stunning panoramic views of the city and the Canterbury Plains), several good surfing beaches, Banks Peninsula and the drive to Akaroa. The list is endless... some folks say that Christchurch is the best city in the world!
