Concrete all-tides BOAT RAMPS and wharves at Omapere and Opononi, take a short walk to SIGNAL STATION POINT (5 minutes drive) for a great view of the harbour, a path to the rocks and beach to witness the turbulent harbour mouth at close quarters. Bush hikes offer varying challenges, WAIATOMARAMA GORGE (5 minutes drive) for short kauri and waterfall walk, or longer one to the top of the ridge(2-3 hours) or see TANE MAHUTA, famed 'father of the forest', (15 minutes drive) in the 19k long WAIPOUA FOREST (5-10 minute walk), or longer kauri walks.
WAIMAMAKU BEACH, on the west coast, 10 minutes away, wild and wonderful.
