Beautiful Cooks Beach is across the road, with the unique Purangi River 2 minutes away, where Captain Cook came ashore to find fresh water, and named the area Mercury Bay after plotting the transit of Mercury here. The surrounding hills are full of wonderful walks in the bush with many interesting features such as large kauri and old gold mines etc. We are minutes away from the ferry to Whitianga which runs continually, Whitianga boasts many restuarants and cafes, a museum and a busy boat club, plus all the usual features of a small town.

Cooks Beach is a particularly safe beach for swimming, kayaking, fishing and enjoying yourself. The Purangi river is beautiful and gives you a choice of beachesand is wonderful to paddle your way up in your canoe or kayak. Hahei Beach is close by with the renowned Cathedral Cove - and Hot Water Beach is 20 minutes away where you can dig your own hot pool at low water. Whitianga is a short ferry trip away with all the restaurants and cafes you will need. You can also book your fishing and dive trips and cruises etc from Whitianga where there are a great selection of boats to choose from. Cooks Beach also has tennis courts and a golf course for your enjoyment, plus a newly opened restaurant. One of our local vineyards now has a cellar door where you can taste and purchase the lovely wines of Mercury Bay Estate in a beautiful setting overlooking the vineyards and bay.
