that special occasion or just a quiet weekend away
and only 25 minutes, 30 kms from Dunedin City.
PLEASE NOTE A MINIMUM OF TWO NIGHT STAYS
Karitane cottage is located in the small coastal settlement of Karitane, just north of Dunedin.
Karitane
Karitane is a delightful seaside village, that lies on the south side of the Waikouaiti River and at the landward end of the
Huriawa Peninsula and only 25 minutes, 30 kms from Dunedin City
There are two lovely swimming beaches – the sheltered Waikouaiti Estuary or the Karitane – Puketeraki ocean beaches;
sea and river fishing and boating as well as features of Maori and early colonial periods.
The Peninsula was a superb natural pa site with history going back to a whaling station opened in the 1830’s at Karitane.
There are many lovely walks around the peninsula as well as along beautiful Karitane beach and surrounds or up to the Marae
just off the coast road towards Dunedin.
The coastal route south to Waitati, passing Seacliff a site of a now closed mental asylum and Warrington another seaside village,
affords magnificent panoramic views, first north over Karitane and Waikouaiti Bay (3km) and in the latter stages south across to the ocean beaches that lie along the northern arm of Otago Harbour, Dunedin.
Karitane village has a local shop as well as a café, kayaking hire and with nearby Waikouaiti township (3km)
which offers hotel, café, bakery and petrol station.
