Visit Russell, the historic first capital of New Zealand - take the passenger ferry from Paihia wharf or the car on the Opua car ferry. Drop in to the Waitangi Treaty House where the treaty of New Zealand was signed in 1840. Watch dolphins, fish, swim, snorkel, sail, kayak around the 144 islands in the Bay. Walking tracks, game fishing, dinner cruises, boat hire, helicopter rides, sky diving, fine dining and quality coffee houses and deserted beaches are all available nearby. Just 25km away is the local cetre of Kerikeri, with a good range of shops and services and the airport with several flights per day to Auckland. Recently reopened is the historic steam train ride from Kawakawa to Opua and soon to open is the cycle track in the same area. Kawakawa is also home to the famous Hundertwasser toilets - worth a "visit" anytime.
