Taupahi Lodge, Turangi - Tongariro River /Crossing, $170 - $170

Rivers, mountains and Lake Taupo on your doorstep make this an idyllic base for your holidays be it swimming, fishing, boating, playing golf, hunting, skiing, trekking the Tongariro Crossing or just relaxing. To quote many of our guests, our Lodge is "GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY". This is a deceptively big 4 bedroom self contained home located on the peaceful river side of town. Set up to accommodate 3 families with a spacious fully equipped kitchen, complete with kent fire and wetback (firewood not supplied). For the keen (and lucky) fishermen there is a specially designed fish cleaning bench outside. Two double bedrooms complete with a double and single bed, a twin single room and last of al l the tv room comprising a double bed, 2 single beds and the 2nd TV set for the kids! We also have a large lockable storage cupboard for all your valuables. A cot is also available - cot bedding not supplied. Riverway Dairy is conveniently located 50 metres along the road for those forgotten items. A short stroll from home brings you to the mighty Tongariro River which in itself comprises some very pretty walking tracks with picturesque views of the river. Great fishing can be had at Judges and Island Pools, just a minute's walk from the Lodge. For the children there is park just along from the Dairy on Taupahi Reserve - a great place for kids to run around and let off steam. There is also a Mini Putt opposite the Police station, a well designed playground/park area behind the local shopping centre, as well as the cool indoor Turtle Pool (planning is currently underway to heat for year round use). The DOC Trout Hatchery down SH1 has a trout pool open to CHILDREN for fishing, they are able to catch a trout (for the pan) - guaranteed! Held in winter months until October, the cost is $6.00 - the price of a child's licence, and all gear is provided. Bookings are limited - contact the Trout Centre direct on Turangi (07) 386 8085 or email: troutcentre@reap.org.nz Turangi has plenty on offer for everyone - from hunting and fishing guides, skiing, white water rafting, river raft fishing (seasonal), hot mineral pools, 4X4 bikes, the Trout Hatchery, horse riding, bush walks, tramping, canoeing the list goes on. Check out the new climbing wall at the Extreme Backpackers, Ngawaka Place. There are two climbing walls to cater for both the experienced and novice climber, both built to international standard and are all weather because they're inside! For those new to Turangi a visit to the Trout Hatchery is highly recommended, just 5 minutes South on State Highway 1. You can feed the fish and also view them underwater through the special viewing window. The new River Walk is now open. If shopping is what you have in mind, the local shopping centre is a 5 minute walk across State Highway 1 - use the underpass! For the more adventurous, Taupo is a 30 minute drive North. Why not take a "Sunday drive" south around Mt Ruapehu, Ngaruahoe and Tongariro. Take in the sights of the vast plains of the Desert Road, the War Museum at Waiouru, Turoa Ski Field at Ohakune, across to Whakapapa Ski Field at National Park - a scenic drive unequalled in the North Island.
