BOAT RAMPS at Omapere and Opononi, take a short walk to SIGNAL STATION POINT (5 minutes drive) for a great view of the harbour, a path to the rocks and beach to witness the turbulent harbour mouth at close quarters. BUSH HIKES offer varying challenges, WAITOMARAMA GORGE (5 minutes drive) for short kauri and waterfall walk, or see TANE MAHUTA, famed 'father of the forest', (15 minutes drive) in the 19k long WAIPOUA FOREST, or longer kauri walks.
WAIMAMAKU BEACH on the west coast, 10 minutes away, spectacularly wild, with MORRELLS CAFE close by.
