South by Southwest, $120 - $160

1944 Haast Jackson Bay Road, Hannah's Clearing
Ref #: 11633
Cosy, private, fully self-contained brand new 3-bedroom Initial Homes cottage at Hannah's Clearing (20 km south of Haast), 150 m from the beach.
Not quite the end of the earth, but you can see it from here. Hannah's Clearing lies within the South Westland World Heritage Area, gazetted by UNESCO in 1990 in recognition of the area's oustanding wilderness characteristics. These include "... the best modern representation of the ancient flora and fauna of Gondwanaland [with] some 14 species of podocarp [and] abundant evidence of the Pleistocene glacial and inter-glacial periods in the landforms ...".
The Haast area immerses visitors in vistas of bush clad mountains, wild rivers, lush temperate rain forest, and lonely beaches. In fine weather the austral night skies, far from smog and light pollution, are as clear as you will ever see. In storm, the beaches are wild, wet, windswept, and wonderful.
The house is tucked into a small stand of native bush and faces out to the coast. Tuis, bellbirds, fantails, pigeons, and moreporks are frequent visitors.
The house is fully furnished and you are welcome to use our linen, but we encourage visitors to provide their own if possible. We have a local service manager who will take care of cleaning and laundry on departure, for an additional charge of $50. Visitors who are prepared to self-clean (laundry can be left in the drier) are exempt from this charge. Regardless of whether or not you are opt to self clean, we ask that all guests take all their rubbish with them on departure.
Please note that we have neither a TV nor a DVD player. We have happily managed without either of these devices for the last 30 years, and invite our guests to do the same for the duration of their stay.
