Wake up to watch our spectacular sunrises that truly deserve the term "glowing skies". Stewart Island is renowned for its uncluttered beaches and clear water. Walk down the private driveway, and in 2 minutes you will be sinking your feet into the clean golden sand of Butterfields Beach. This is a fabulous beach for the young and young at heart! Akomoana's birdlife abounds throughout the private garden and in the surrounding native bush on the property. Be delighted by such regular visitors as Tuis, Tomtits; the cheeky and gregarious Kaka (parrot); the tuneful Bellbird and shy Robin. Most visit at Akomoana daily. The township & wharf are only a casual 15-20 minute walk (dependent on age and fitness level- including some hills)along Horseshoe Bay Road, with points of interest along the way. You can pause at Old Mill Creek, the site of a early 1800's sawmill, watch for kingfishers on the fuschia tree, or take a right turn onto Mapua Road and check out one of the best views from the local cemetery. Historic headstones can give visitors glimpses into the island's past. Turn left onto Kamahi Road and follow the sign posted track to Bathing Beach.
Once in the township, all activities are accessible from here. Visit the general store for supplies (they can deliver), check out the Information Centre to book fishing trips, hire a car, scooter or mountain bike!
If you prefer less strenuous activities, embark on a boat cruise or bus tour. Visit the famous South Sea Hotel to quench your thirst or enjoy our famous blue cod on the menu.
